Case Edgerton Studios is thrilled to present new work for the board by Minneapolis-based artist Kim Benson. Re-adding (after Maria van Oosterwijk)
will be on view at the corner of Case and Edgerton through October when it will run concurrently with the Solidarity Street Gallery in the Payne-Phalen Neighborhood of St Paul, and a solo exhibition at TOA Presents at their new location in North Minneapolis.
'I created the collage through numerous layers thinking about elemental recurring forms in my larger work: triangles, circles, squares while working in imagery from 17th century painting: Portrait of Maria van Oosterwijck, 1671, by Wallerant Vaillant. This work has been a source of inspiration for many years. I was interested in creating a portal like space within the square format. A detail of Maria van Oosterwijck's hand and book (bible) is within the circle and outside of it. I was thinking about the way her hand is carefully placed near the corner of the page, a moment of stillness, in between an action, the touch of the paper, and to have this moment/detail within a cosmic and potentially hallucinatory space. I created the patterning through stenciling with lace fabric. I distressed the surface of the collage with sanding, scraping, and dry brushing to create an effect of erosion or decay, thinking about the passage of time, the cyclical nature of all things, and to bring forth and reassert the materiality of the work. Both the physical qualities of the work and the illusionistic imagery coalesce into one visual work that hopefully engages people passing by to stop and look at the work.'

Kim Benson: Jubilant Space I-IV on view at TOA Presents Summer 2025
TOA Presents is pleased to feature Jubilant Space I-IV, a suite of new screenprints by Minneapolis-based artist Kim Benson, published by Entity Editions.
Kim Benson and Drew Peterson began collaborating on Jubilant Space I-IV in 2022, shortly after COVID-19 precautions eased. Their partnership developed organically, rooted in mutual admiration and the convenience of working as neighboring studio artists. With no set outcome in mind beyond the experience of collaboration, they embraced an experimental process that prioritized variety over edition size. Benson’s use of stencils and digitally printed films used in her paintings translated naturally into screen printing, sparking Peterson’s interest in techniques that could heighten the tactile qualities of the medium. Jubilant Space I-IV is a testament to the collaborative process between printer and artist, revealing a shared visual language that emerged through gesture, texture and intuition—an exchange marked not by precision, but by play, responsiveness and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
Drew Peterson developed Entity Editions in 2018 as a fine art printmaking resource committed to the publication, production and education of print media through collaboration with emerging artists and educational workshops. Peterson has worked with numerous artists since launching Entity Editions, including Caroline Kent, Ruben Nusz, Frank Big Bear, Cameron Downey and Ta-Coumba Aiken, amongst others.
Kim Benson: Unearthed at Jessica Silverman Gallery

Jessica Silverman is pleased to announce Kim Benson’s “Unearthed,” the Minneapolis-based artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and first solo presentation on the West Coast, from June 7 to July 20, 2024. The exhibition features 11 new oil paintings made over the past year that push Benson’s work to new scales. Mining the history of art through an excavation and reinterpretation of Renaissance paintings, Unearthed expands and abstracts the genres of landscape, still life, and portraiture.
Within the exhibition, representational figures and objects are transfigured into abstraction. Using lace, fabric, metallic paint, stencils, and tape, Benson meticulously layers rich, impasto surfaces such that imagery emerges and dissolves. Lace is both ground and subject, a veil and mode for reveal through which Benson materially and conceptually erodes the facade of history.
