Materially and metaphorically, representations dissolve under a multitude of strategies that include sanding, stenciling, casting, and extruding, as well as more traditional modes of application by brush. I strive to create a painting that plays with the viewer’s comprehension of space, form, and illusion by complicating the visual pathways. I am a materialist who is continually fascinated with the processes of painting. I utilize a myriad of different techniques including but not limited to brushing, spraying, sanding, scraping, rubbing and printing. Along with the mechanics I am equally interested in the history of painting. Currently, I am looking back to the 17th century Dutch still-life genre, in particular the paintings by Maria van Oosterwijck, for both their array of metaphors and formal configurations, and even further back to the Etruscan tomb paintings from 4th century BCE for their rich and distressed surfaces suggesting ideas of loss, decay, and transformation. By referencing these sources and delving deep into process, I consider my own conceptual concerns in order to build my personal painting language. Although, these themes might at first seem disparate, they are deep rooted, and offer an endless array of problems to discover. Kim Benson and Drew Peterson began collaborating on Jubilant Space I-IV in 2022, shortly after COVID-19 precautions eased. Their partnership developed organically, rooted in mutual admiration and the convenience of working as neighboring studio artists. With no set outcome in mind beyond the experience of collaboration, they embraced an experimental process that prioritized variety over edition size. Benson’s use of stencils and digitally printed films used in her paintings translated naturally into screen printing, sparking Peterson’s interest in techniques that could heighten the tactile qualities of the medium. Jubilant Space I-IV is a testament to the collaborative process between printer and artist, revealing a shared visual language that emerged through gesture, texture and intuition—an exchange marked not by precision, but by play, responsiveness and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Drew Peterson developed Entity Editions in 2018 as a fine art printmaking resource committed to the publication, production and education of print media through collaboration with emerging artists and educational workshops. Peterson has worked with numerous artists since launching Entity Editions, including Caroline Kent, Ruben Nusz, Frank Big Bear, Cameron Downey and Ta-Coumba Aiken, amongst others. The exhibition features 11 new oil paintings made over the past year that push Benson’s work to new scales. Mining the history of art through an excavation and reinterpretation of Renaissance paintings, Unearthed expands and abstracts the genres of landscape, still life, and portraiture. Within the exhibition, representational figures and objects are transfigured into abstraction. Using lace, fabric, metallic paint, stencils, and tape, Benson meticulously layers rich, impasto surfaces such that imagery emerges and dissolves. Lace is both ground and subject, a veil and mode for reveal through which Benson materially and conceptually erodes the facade of history.
